Bee Conservation

Our lucky bees are located in some of the most beautiful locations in West Dorset. These chalk downs are also home to hundreds of species of birds, bumble bees and butterflies. The Reiki Bee Project enables Honey Bees to thrive, undisturbed in this safe, certified organic and bio-diverse environment.

We aim to provide bees with as near-natural environment as possible. Thanks to our fundraising in 2016 our newest bee colonies now live in ‘Warre Hives’, which mimic tree trunks, keeping the bees better insulated than in conventional honey-farming hives. The Reiki Bees draw their own wax, rather than using commercially prepared foundation wax (which can contain contaminates and pesticides). This combination makes a less attractive environment for Varoa mites, negating the need for us to routinely use treatment chemicals.

Our bees are checked regularly from their hive entrances, their hives are only opened to meet our legal requirements or if we feel they are in need of assistance. We believe that one contribution to honey bee colony collapse is human intervention, so we carefully monitor, allowing the bees to manage themselves, as they have done for millions of years!

As Warre Hives are expensive we also use customised, insulated traditional hives to the same effect.

We gladly welcome donations of any good quality secondhand bee-keeping equipment.

Sponsor A Hive

Our ‘Bee Involved’ Sponsorship Package is for those who want to sponsor a hive, either for yourself, or as gift, Birthday, Christmas, Retirement, Christening etc. Your money goes straight to the bees, we do not waste money on printed items. You will receive a quarterly report from your hive, with photographs, sent via email.

Every year (usually in time for Christmas) we will send you 6lbs of the most beautiful, raw, unpasturised honey produced by your own bees. Bees fly about 55,000 miles to make just one pound of honey (that’s over twice around the world) so we like to leave them enough to survive the winter and to maintain the health of the colony.
